Many masters will say that the solidification time first of all directly depends on the thickness of the tile adhesive layer. This is, of course, a true statement. But, as a rule, the technology of tiling has already been brought, practically, to perfection.
And, before laying tiles on the surface, the latter is always leveled with a screed. And to distribute the finished solution along the plane, there are standard spatulas. Therefore, the thickness of the glue layer, even for different masters, is almost the same.
Some novice veneers do not understand why to look for an answer to the question of how much tile glue dries on the floor. After all, the time of complete solidification is indicated on the bag with a dry mixture from many manufacturers. But few people know that the package contains data that is correct for ideal conditions. And all the numbers in the instructions are mostly conditional.
To meet the conditions specified by the manufacturer, it is necessary to maintain a stable temperature regime throughout the entire process of work without the slightest deviation. This is considered to be the ambient temperature from 20 to 24 °C. But in fact, maintaining such a norm is difficult due to many factors.
The temperature regime will necessarily be affected by drafts, the moisture content in the room, and even the time of year. In summer, ideal conditions occur more often. And then you can move on the tile after a day of waiting. In winter, it is necessary to add 12-16 hours to this period.
You need to remember the main rule, but with one exception. The warmer the room is, the faster the glue will dry. But it is undesirable to raise the temperature artificially. If the conditions are not natural, then deformation is possible. And low-quality tiles can even crack.
Tile mortar may not harden at all if the temperature in the room is below plus 5 degrees Celsius. And excessive heat above 30 °C can negatively affect the properties of the adhesive. The surface will be ready for use much earlier, but there is a high risk that the tile will peel off soon.
Condition of the foundation
Let’s see how long you can walk on the tile, if you take into account the condition of the floor. After all, an ideal screed allows you to minimize the thickness of the working solution layer. Otherwise, the curing time may increase slightly. But most of all, the process is affected by the water absorption of materials.
Concrete screed treated with a primer, almost completely does not absorb water. Therefore, the drying time is not affected. But if the surface contains enough pores, this will speed up the solidification process, since the base will take away some of the water from the working solution.
The same goes for the tile material. Water-repellent porcelain tiles will not speed up the drying process. A regular clay tile will absorb a little liquid from the glue, which will speed up the surface hardening.
An important factor is the temperature of the base itself. Because it will always be lower than the ambient air. Therefore, before working, it is necessary to equalize the difference as much as possible. And if the latter remains significant, it will necessarily increase the curing time.
Consider how much the tile dries on the floor after laying, depending on the humidity in the room. To do this, we will again return to the manufacturer, who believes that many objects at the repair stage have ideal conditions. For example, the humidity in them is at the border of 40 %.
It is not entirely clear where this confidence came from, but in fact it is not so. Such dryness is possible only during the construction phase of the facility, and even then, in the summer. When the building is connected to utilities and people already live in it, the humidity in the premises is much higher than indicated.
And only one thing follows from this. The higher the moisture content of the room, the longer the tile adhesive will take to dry. Therefore, if the solution in the corridor can dry out in 24-36 hours, then in the kitchen it is necessary to double this time. And for some problematic bathrooms, even a week may not be enough.
How to determine the time of process completion
Even after finding out approximately how much the tile dries on the floor, it is necessary to proceed to the subsequent stages of work only with full confidence of the completion of the process. To do this, perform basic checks. They are performed in two ways.
It is necessary to conduct a light tapping with a rubber hammer on the tile. This is done in the area of its corners. If after the actions performed, the tile does not move, then you can be sure that the glue has dried.
But it is most reliable to try to tear the glued element from the surface. It is better to perform the operation from the edge, so that in case of a violation of the integrity, it is easier to re-lay the tile in place. And if, despite the checks, doubts remain, then you need to put plywood to move along the tile. This reduces the surface load area.
